Mirepoix usher in their next era with debut EP 'Limbo'

Louis, Angel, Gareth, Elliott and Tash, formerly known as ‘Riff Raff’, are back with a new name, and a new collection of quintessential tracks to get stuck into. The quintet now known as ‘Mirepoix‘, a completely unique and stand alone project in the Brighton music melting-pot, are re-establishing their newfound sound with an EP packed with dreamy vocals, plucky and complex riffs and powerful melodies.

This EP ‘Limbo’ means a lot to us. The name comes from being in the place of what we were before and who we are becoming now. In this new era of music, style and direction.

The first thing that struck me about Mirepoix, something that made them completely stand out to me when first seeing them, have to be the vocals. Vocalist Angel presents something singular compared to the complex riffs on the track, vocals that would typically be more at home accompanied with jazz and soul, but this unexpected amalgamation is what makes their sound work so well.

The first track, “Get Away” is where the vocals shine especially, a slower introduction to ease us into the rest of the EP, and as we move through the tracks build and build, telling a sonic story reminiscent of modern pop rock powerhouse “Paramore” and their most recent album “This is Why”.

The stand out track for me is the second song “Try to Fly”. It has this beautifully meticulous shade and light, with detailed instrumentals that go from 100 back to 0 and back again, with catchy little pauses spattered throughout, eventually reaching an almost operatic crescendo toward the end. The whole EP has everything, not just powerful vocals, but expert technicalities and personal, raw lyricism.

What I like especially about Mirepoix and this EP, is that you can tell they are just doing their own thing. There’s no boundaries of genre, or scene or image. You can tell that they are a group of people who just really love music, whatever it is, and they’re bloody good at it, which shines through in everything they do. The new EP, Limbo, is a direct reflection of that, and I can’t wait to see more from Mirepoix.

Their debut EP releases May 30th, and they’ll be marking the occasion on June 2nd with a stripped set at The Folklore Rooms alongside Nagasaki Dog and M.Woodroe.
