Cowbell-kissed melancholy rhythms from Gutterfly
The unveiling of Brighton’s newest fresh-faced trio ‘Gutterfly’ was a undoubtable highlight to Brighton’s 2024 grassroots calendar, and with the release of the debut single ‘Get Away Sometime’ a year later, this group are striving for a discography of quality over quantity. The track delivers a rolling guitar melody interwoven with immersive harmonies, steadily building into a distorted frenzy of sweeping distortion and dissonance, blurring the sonic clarity of the verses + choruses and opting for a disorderly finale that plays homage to the alt-rock richness that Brighton delivers so effortlessly.
'Our debut single is the sound of carefully optimistic longing. The quiet want to change time/place; the feeling of having FOMO for the summer that never was.'
Lovingly garnished with percussive flair, the addition of cowbell and tambourine wraps up a dynamically-rich and texture-filled sound which is equally simple yet experimental. Gutterfly are forging a discography that floats above definitional coherence, pushing against convention and fusing vocal elements that vary from softly-spoken to powerfully-projected cries.
As a first release, the three-piece are a;ready generating a buzz that has also seen them taking the stage with Distress Call back on 5/8, with the added possibility of further activity towards the end of ’25. It’s safe to say, Gutterfly is a firm addition to our ‘Best of Brighton‘ playlist, and we can’t wait to see what follows!
