Girl Apocrypha – MADONNA and Thank God!

Girl Apocrypha – a release hat-trick!
Brighton’s Girl Apocrypha is rapidly establishing herself as one of the UK’s most intriguing alternative newcomers. The solo project of musician Emia Demir blends grunge, post-punk and pop into a sound she describes as “grunge-pop”.
Following the release of her debut single “Dealer“, Girl Apocrypha continued to build momentum with “MADONNA“, a bold and stylish track that showcased her flair for theatrical storytelling and club-inspired energy. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Lady Gaga while retaining the grit of bands like Placebo and Nine Inch Nails, “MADONNA” embraced a larger-than-life aesthetic, pairing infectious hooks with an unmistakably alternative edge.
Her latest single, “Thank God!”, takes a more emotionally vulnerable turn. Written about the loss of a friendship that carried more weight than romantic heartbreak, the track explores bitterness, grief and unresolved attachment through sharp lyricism and atmospheric production. Produced by acclaimed Brighton producer Jag Jago, the song combines distorted vocal effects, gothic textures and brooding indie-rock instrumentation, creating a sound that feels both contemporary and nostalgic.
Across both releases, Girl Apocrypha demonstrates an ability to balance contrasting worlds. “MADONNA” delivers glitter-stained confidence and pop spectacle, while “Thank God!” reveals the emotional honesty beneath the persona. Together, the singles offer a compelling introduction to an artist who refuses to be confined by genre, drawing equally from alternative rock, industrial sounds and modern pop.
Having already earned attention from BBC Radio 6 Music, Dork, Loud Women and other tastemaker publications, Girl Apocrypha is proving herself to be one of Brighton’s most exciting emerging artists. With each release, she continues to construct a distinctive musical universe that is as angsty as it is camp, as vulnerable as it is defiant.
