Could Be Ghosts kick off with post-hardcore anthem 'i'm not safe in my space'
Post Hardcore, while now a genre, was once a moment in time. The icons that sprung from that era reached worldwide fame, and were the start of a momentous cultural impact. Try as hard as you might, you cannot replicate that moment in modern music history.
There’s a certain grit, an exciting, dirty energy of sticky vans on basement floors and sweaty heads colliding in harmony. This energy is specific, it’s only ever accidental, and it’s something that without trying, Could Be Ghosts (stylised as ‘could be ghosts) achieve every time. And their new single “i’m not safe in my space” is no exception.
The single builds in an utterly unique way, pairing grungy low riffs with anthemic emo interludes, setting the sonic tone almost immediately. The switch between the two styles sum up Could Be Ghosts’ purposeful yet erratic energy, their meeting position between all genres and scenes, the ability to fit everywhere, while also being nowhere.
The vocals from singer Florence capture the quite perfectly unpolished melodies of their predecessors, reaching those melodic sweet spots while still staying true to the heavy undertones of the song.
The vocals on the last chorus overlap with lead guitar to build and build to an almost operatic crescendo, followed by a stand out technical electric riff to close the song.
As always, ‘could be ghosts’ have made something so true to era that it’s uncanny, with the essence of the band still shining through, which is hard to come by in local scenes. I don’t doubt that the band have even more wonderful stuff lined up for us to sink our teeth into, and I for one, cannot wait.
Their debut EP will be revealed in a few months time. In the meantime, check out their latest release here ahead of their upcoming appearance at London’s New Cross Inn.
