AudioActive – A GRIME SUPREME

Brighton’s music scene is set to shine this May as the New Generation Jazz Festival returns as part of Brighton Fringe. Taking place at Wundabarn at The Spiegel Gardens on Wednesday 28 May, this special showcase brings together some of the city’s most exciting young talent for an evening of fresh, genre-blending performances.
At the heart of the event is A GRIME SUPREME, a pioneering project from celebrated jazz development organisation Tomorrow’s Warriors – where the 2023 Mercury Prize Winning 5-piece outfit Ezra Collective first met!
'The project explores and creates connections between grime and jazz, building bridges between the two forms of music which are often segregated and disconnected, largely due to social and economic inequalities as well as artistic differences.'
Known for championing UK jazz for over three decades, the group makes its Brighton debut with a collaboration that bridges grime, jazz and contemporary music, creating new opportunities for young producers, MCs and instrumentalists.
The project sees Tomorrow’s Warriors join forces with Brighton’s own AudioActive, Create Music and New Generation Jazz, three of the city’s leading talent development organisations.
Since late March, twenty-four young musicians aged 13 to 25 have taken part in workshops led by award-winning drummer Moses Boyd, AHNANSÉ from Steam Down, and acclaimed producer Swindle, alongside local mentors from each partner organisation.
The result of these sessions will be performed live at the festival. The evening opens with a set from New Generation Jazz’s Futures band, before the full A GRIME SUPREME collective takes to the stage for a one-off performance blending jazz, grime and other contemporary sounds in bold and original ways.
All profits from the event will go to a designated charity, adding another layer of community impact to this inspiring project.
