Room Service release debut EP “The Plastic Cosmic Fantastic Hotel”

The Brighton six piece have followed up their singles “Poolside” and  “Plastic Cosmic Fantastic Hotel” with an EP of the same name, taking listeners on a conceptual journey through something resembling Stephen King’s Overlook hotel on LSD. Room Service have proved themselves not only technical masters, but with this new EP they have kept a succinct, unique and fun thread of storytelling that binds each track together. They use samples of seagull calls at the very beginning to echo their Brighton roots, and have a multitude of fun spoken words throughout.

The third track “Elevatorlude” is a beautiful little break in the band’s usual funky sound, with ambient guitar and simplistic vocals before transitioning into the EP’s titular track, which you can read our full review on here. The stand out track for me is the 6th track “Dr Ice Cold” in which the listener gets introduced to the perpetual bachelor and life of the party, you guessed it, Dr Ice Cold. He introduces you to his chupacabra and 100 bisexuals and gives you the story of his time at the hotel. The track is a love letter to old school hip hop and ties in well with their indie funk sound, making for an outstanding and extremely danceable track.

The band have also displayed their incredible range, with songs like “Dr Ice Cold” accompanying slower, dreamier and more emotional tracks “Poolside” and “Rooftop”, that tap into the more complex and philosophical themes of the EP, lifting the veil on the darker side of the nightlife scene and music industry.

Room Service have painted a picture so vivid it’s impossible not to see the entire album as a visual piece too. The narrative elements are fantastic. They’re funny, quick, accompany the surrealist vibe of the music, and also speak to wider conversations about the industry that more artists should be having.

'Only at the end of the writing process when we understood that the hotel itself represented the comforts of life that tend to keep you from moving forward.'

Taking the EP to the dancefloor, Room Service delighted sold out crowds at Brighton’s Alphabet on October 21st (thanks for the invite Niamh!), debuting a full playthrough of the EP – accompanied with sing-alongs, dance-inducing rhythms and plenty of feel-good funk. With upcoming live dates just announced, it’s never been easier to get some Room Service near YOU.

Great service, funky tunes, and a really fun vibe- we would certainly stay here again.
